If Jennings starts, Williams have very little value. In any event, I’ve given myself $50 for this bankroll and I’ll be trying to keep track of them as I go forward.
D: GB Packers – Finally, I am going with an obvious choice for my defense: the Green Bay Packers against the Atlanta Falcons. It finished even more poorly when my studs wide receivers were barely even targeted!
My first thought was to go with DeMarco Murray. Green Bay has been on a scoring tear of late and the Falcons cannot run the ball very effectively. I do this for several reasons, including giving me vital information on whether certain games are profitable for me, as well as the fact that it is fun to see these kinds of experiments. That is true despite the fact that the Colts simply will not give up on Richardson, no doubt in part due to the fact that they gave so much for him. Nelson is fast, has great hands, and is the number one option for Rodgers lately (although Randall Cobb is trying to take that away from Nelson). Although I realize that the Jags are sneaky good on defense (i.e., two tds last week, a few forced fumbles against Luck and the Colts the week before), I still think Ryan Fitzpatrick will tear up their secondary and get me at least three scores.
. Against the horrible Atlanta Falcons secondary, I expect Nelson to go off and haul in 9 catches for 150 yards and two TD’s. As such, I always want to try to select a stud that will play in each of the primetime games for that week. Just saying….
K: D. For the games starting on Thursday, I typically like to play the “$40K Thu NFL Snap.” The entry fee is $2 and the first place prize is $2,500. Bennett has been really solid over the past few weeks after returning from an injury so I would guess that he is good for at least one touchdown and a handful of receptions.
With that said, Dez Bryant is a beast and has a nice matchup against the crappy Bears secondary. The week started off poorly when Latavius Murray (UCF! UCF! UCF!) finally got some playing time and busted out in a huge way, especially considering he only had four carries before he was concussed and had to leave the game. However, because 3,720 places actually cash, this game provides a good opportunity to increase the size of my bankroll.
FanDuel December 2014 NFL (Games Starting Thursday) Bankroll
Now that I have started publically posting my FanDuel NFL lineups, I have decided to try to keep track of my bankrolls involved in each different type of games. I am hoping that means that Matty Ice will try to force the ball to his top receivers and Green Bay can enjoy a few pick-six dances.
RB 2: A. I like to play one of each because it provides for more variety and an opportunity to strategize against what I think other players will be trying to accomplish. Put it in the books!
WR 2: D. Bennett – Michael Bennett is a stud. Fitzpatrick – This guy was so bad that he lost his job. As a result, this is sort of a revenge game and piques my interest. For a price tag of only $6,400, that would put my team heading in the right direction.
WR 3: J. only games, etc. The problem is the Tony Romo is a Jekyll and Hyde type of player and you never know what he is going to deliver, especially when it gets cold and the games start to count. Herron – Dan Herron is so much better than Trent Richardson. While I am all about starting players in “revenge games” (i.e., games against former teams that gave up on them such as Steve Smith, Jr.’s amazing game against the Panthers), I think Herron has established himself as the man over the past two weeks. I expect the game to be a high scoring affair so maybe Bailey will get some field goals and a bunch of extra points.
For me, this week is no exception and I am dying to erase last week’s football selections from my memory. However, I like Bailey way too much to not take him and his cheap $4,900 salary. I look for Herron to be the guy that runs all over Cleveland and I expect two touch downs: one receiving and one rushing. The problem is, however, that I have Murray in my season long fantasy football league and the quickest way for me to ensure that he will suck is to select him on my FanDuel lineup! Of course, I am only half-joking but I cannot tell you how many times this seems to be the case and, as a result, I am going to steer clear of Murray this week and be content that he will help my season-long team.
December 2014 NFL (Games Starting Thursday) Week 14 Bankroll: $50.00
My FanDuel December 2014 NFL (Games Starting Thursday) Lineup
QB: R. Thursday night’s matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears has me drooling! There should be a lot of points scored and I want to get in on a piece of that action.
Thursday nights bring such excitement for American football fans around the world. Williams – With this selection, I am breaking one of my primary rules to never start someone in a fantasy game with games starting on Thursday when I am not sure if that person will play and/or start. Bryant – For me, one of the reasons I love daily fantasy sports is to actually watch my players perform. Stills – Kenny Stills is a freak, especially since Cooks went down with a season-ending injury. Of course, I am still going with Bryant despite those concerns.
WR 1: K. That guy is a total beast and will no doubt run all over the Bears. While Bennett left the Cowboys at a time that Dallas wanted him to remain with them, he knew that he would always remain behind Jason Witten, something that was not acceptable to him. However, if he sits, I am looking at a “Trey Mason against the Raiders” kind of performance, something I am going to need to hedge my bet against one of my studs underperforming. Bailey – With this selection, I am breaking another rule where I do not pick players from my season-long team. I am looking for seven catches and 110 yards. He sucked on the Bills and for most of this season, he sucked on Houston’s squad. Of course, when Ryan Mallet when down with an injury, he promptly put up an amazing performance which included six TD’s! Although his price skyrocketed this week (it went from $5,000 to $7,200), I am going with the hot hand, especially since the Texans are up against Jacksonville this week. Over that time, Stills has been one of the primary targets of Drew Brees, something I hope continues this week. Additionally, it seems that lately a few of the other receivers and tight ends are getting in on the action and I am worried that Beasley, Williams or one of the tight ends (Witten or Escobar) will creep some of my touch downs. Nelson – There is not much to say about Jordy Nelson other than to reiterate that he and Aaron Rodgers are an amazing combo. Not only is it the night the first games of the NFL week begin, Thursdays provide yet another opportunity to “get it right” and show the world that you actually know what you are doing when it comes to fantasy football.
TE: M. While the matchup is not perfect and the Panthers are capable of holding down an air attack, Stills is quick with good hands. For $6,400, that would be a nice day for my team.
Fortunately, however, Week 14 is a new week and we all get to start over. Here, Jennings is hurt and is currently listed as “questionable.” Accordingly, I want to start Williams because the Giants are playing Tennessee, a team that has been absolutely lit up over the past few weeks. For those of you playing daily sports on FanDuel, you have no doubt realized that there are several different alternatives that are available, including games that involve all of the week’s games, Sunday only games, Sunday at 1:00 p.m. I like Jenngings but I think the Giants should give him time to heal.
Major League Baseball, while transitioning to new commissioner Rob Manfred, declined comment. And that is happening now in the state of Nevada; so we have relationships with the betting companies in Las Vegas, so that we are notified if there’s any irregular activity. “We do know that the more information that is centrally aggregated, the better chance we’ll have of spotting irregular activity on our sport. Congressmen, Frank LoBiondo and Frank Pallone of New Jersey, have introduced federal bills to amend the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, the 22-year-old federal ban on state-sponsored sports betting. According to Whelan’s office, the NBA responded and expressed interest in discussing the issue, but has not followed up.
“It’s my personal view that there should be federal legislation on this issue, in part to avoid what is happening now,” Silver said. “I think most of our owners’ view on the issue is that they’re comfortable with us taking a leadership position on the issue, but again are also mindful that it’s a complex issue, and is one that will ultimately require a legislative remedy, and not one that is necessarily at the top of their to-do list, in terms of active lobbying.”
The NBA has spoken with the English Premier League about how it handles the betting on its matches and studied financial models in jurisdictions where sports betting is legal, like China, New Zealand and the U.K.
The other major professional sports leagues are not on the same page. The NFL says its opposition to legalized sports betting has not changed.
“Some of our owners are also owners in other leagues, so it’s something that they also want to talk to the commissioners in the other leagues about,” Silver said. He wrote an op-ed in The New York Times in November that called for Congress to create a federal framework and allow states to authorize betting on pro sports.
Silver said the NBA is not currently taking an active legislative approach, but others are. I will say that certainly all of them are interested in having a better understanding of the issue, and I know have assigned people in their organizations to study intensively the issue as well.”
The NBA is not the only professional league in the United States taking a close look at sports betting legalization.. “My greatest concern is that there will be in essence a hodgepodge of regulations controlling sports betting that will vary from state to state, jurisdiction to jurisdiction and will make it increasingly difficult to monitor betting on our very own sport.”
Silver also addressed the gambling scandal involving former NBA referee Tim Donaghy in 2007. But we’re also aware that that’s a minuscule percentage of the overall betting on our sport.”
Sources with direct knowledge of the meetings came away believing the NHL is more open to legalization than Bettman’s comments indicate. “I leave it to them to make any public statements they want to make on it. The NHL did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Jim Whelan and State Assemblyman Vincent Mazzeo sent a letter to the NBA offering a .25 percent commission fee off bets. “But for the FBI knocking on our door and notifying us about Donaghy’s betting, none of the systems that we then had in place had captured any betting by Tim Donaghy.”
“We’re not ready to take a position on which model is the right one for the NBA,” Silver said. The NHL is currently considering placing a franchise in Las Vegas, and like all the leagues, is participating in daily fantasy sports.
While discussions are ongoing behind the scenes, Silver is the only active commissioner to come out publicly in support of legalization. He was convicted and served 15 months in federal prison. John McCain, speaking last week on ESPN podcast “Capital Games,” said he also believes it’s time for Congress to hold hearings to discuss legalizing sports betting.
“I have talked to the commissioners in the other leagues about [legalizing sports betting],” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in an exclusive interview with ESPN The Magazine in late January at the league’s Manhattan office. Discussions on the issue have been taking place between the owners for several years, but until the other leagues come on board, it remains complicated for owners like Ted Leonsis of the Washington Wizards. Leonsis also owns the Washington Capitals of the NHL.
In addition, two U.S. New Jersey has been fighting in court against the sports leagues, including the NBA, to bring Las Vegas-style sports betting to its ailing casinos and horse racing tracks for four years. “Should it be viewed in the competitive team-oriented sense that it is now, or does it become a vehicle for betting, which may in effect change the atmosphere in the stadiums and in the arenas?”
Meanwhile, three states, New York, Indiana and South Carolina, have introduced bills to legalize sports betting this year. Sen. Minnesota state representative Phyllis Kahn has told ESPN that she’ll be introducing a similar bill early in this legislative session. LoBiondo and Pallone are hoping Silver’s stance sparks interest in their bills, but both are also wary of the other leagues’ resistance.
“While I wouldn’t categorize [daily fantasy] as sports betting,” Silver said, “on the continuum of no betting at all and legalized betting, it’s certainly somewhere on the spectrum, but not yet sports betting.”
“I think there needs some attention to be paid to what sport is going to represent to young people,” Bettman said in an interview with CNN. Donaghy admitted to betting on games he officiated and passing along inside information to gamblers. That case is headed to appeals court in the spring.
In September, New Jersey State Sen. Silver said the Donaghy scandal helped shape his new thinking on the legalization of sports betting.
In addition to the conversations between the commissioners, there have been other private meetings between council for the leagues to discuss the pros and cons of legalization, multiple sources with direct knowledge told ESPN.
“As long you have the other major leagues saying that ‘this is evil and bad’ and ‘we don’t want it,’ that will be an excuse for many to just stay away from it,” LoBiondo said.
“The Donaghy controversy also made me aware how important it is that we have a way of monitoring irregular activity on our games,” Silver said. The NHL’s Gary Bettman has been the only commissioner to speak out since Silver’s op-ed.
While he may not have the full support of the other leagues, Silver says NBA owners approve of his approach
